Bed and breakfast reviews: What one visitor said ( taken from Tripadvisor)( http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g729747-d1102006-Reviews-NorthCourt_Manor-Shorwell_Isle_of_Wight_England.html)

“What a surprise when we arrived; expecting Osbourne House to be the highlight of our visit we were not prepared for the magnificence of this Jacobean mansion, which looks every inch as if it should be included in a National Trust or English Heritage handbook. John and Christine are passionate about their house and garden and have prepared a fascinating history of both, which is really worth reading. We were encouraged to explore the 15 acres and could only marvel at John’s unswerving dedication to all things green. We were treated to a Harrison family friendly tennis game on the lawn on Friday afternoon (I don’t think they spotted us!) and we felt as if we’d been invited to a weekend house party ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ style! Our suite (Lady Gordon Room) was massive and extremely comfortable but more surprisingly, given the height of the ceilings and the original oak mullioned single-glazed windows, toasty and warm (especially appreciated by me). The piping hot water was plentiful enough even for the huge roll top bath, and the window shutters kept out any drafts and all of the light, meaning I was blissfully unaware of the presence of daylight and subsequently the last to breakfast every morning. We are grateful to John and Christine for the information about the local concert on Saturday evening, which was excellent; and also for allowing Robert, who is a talented musician, to play their beautiful and rare 18th century chamber organ, which resides in their hallway (well, doesn’t everyone’s?). This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight and there were other delights we enjoyed during our stay although ‘the North Court experience’ threatens to eclipse them all. ”

The garden is beautiful with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and at the other end is the local pub which produces really good quality meals. John and Christine are also more than happy to advise on local sights, walking routes and places to eat – where to go and where to avoid.

You can stay at cheaper B&Bs on the island but you can also spend a lot more and I’m not sure for the same money you will get anything like the quality of experience that you will get at Northcourt. I have already been recommending it to friends and will be going back again in the future I am sure

And another :

“Our stay at Northcourt definitely exceeded our expectations. I agree with all the comments below so would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful hideaway in a beautiful historic house with absolutely gorgeous romantic gardens. Accommodation on the Isle of Wight does tend to be a little dated but Northcourt is traditional & authentic and we were not at all disappointed. We appreciated the little extras that not all B&B’s provide – fresh flowers from the garden, candles in the bathroom and fruit from the garden at breakfast which in our case were raspberries & blackcurrents. Christine & John obviously work extremely hard to keep the house & garden looking as wonderful as they do but are at the same time welcoming & helpful.”

Northcourt Stables. We have had planning granted for  residential courses in the stables and restoration of the building and kitchen garden. The plans are available on the Isle of Wight council website under  http://www.iwight.com/council/departments/planning/appsdip/AppDetails3.aspx?frmId=24352. Due to high costs of renovation and conditions to be satisfied, we are not yet in a position to proceed. However we have built a cottage on footprint of old glasshouses and replaced one glass house for which we received the top IW RIBA award.
